Period Piece:
In my mind there are two types of people who go looking for the period piece movies: 1) the romantics and the 2) historical/literary buffs. We all love and hate movies for different reasons and sometimes a movie just doesn't do a book justice-- for this reason I'll use my best judgement when recommending the movie and/or show.
Television:
Downton Abbey: Could there be a better series for both the literary buffs and the romantics! The answer is no. Downton abbey does an excellent job of exploring the important cultural and hierarchical issues of the period in addition to providing us romantics with the love, lust, and drama of the time.

Random, but great movies on Instant!
It's hard to pick a movie when you are seeing hundreds of titles... Here are a couple randos that shouldn't disappoint.
Lincoln Lawyer : Looking for action, a bit of blood, and Mathew McConaughey. Pick me!

North and South: Downton Abbey withdrawal? This BBC miniseries adapted from Elizabeth Gaskell's novel won't disappoint.
Kissing Jessica Stein: Alternative RomCom- great soundtrack, fun movie.
